On 30 March 2026, the event “Nature-based Solutions: between technical standards, research and good practices” took place in Milan, organised by UNI and sponsored by CMCC within the NATURANCE project. The meeting provided an important opportunity for discussion between standardisation, applied research, and concrete examples of NbS implementation in urban contexts.

During the morning, speakers presented the UNI, CEN and ISO standardisation framework for urban sustainability and climate adaptation, emphasising the pivotal role of nature in urban well-being. Particular attention was given to EN 18140 “Nature-based Solutions – Vocabulary and Principles”, which introduces a common language and a shared classification of NbS at the European level. The CWA on nature-based insurance and investment solutions, developed within the NATURANCE project, was also discussed, showing the links between technical standards, research, and insurance and financial instruments. The event also showcased practical experiences, such as the ICESP database of good practices, urban regeneration pathways in Turin and Milan, activities of NbS Italy Hub, and European urban strategies for nature-based approaches.
The main points that emerged included the need for shared standards, robust metrics, multi-level governance, and stronger integration between NbS, public policies, and financing instruments.
