A series of short, high-level online events designed to engage key institutional, business, and research stakeholders on innovative approaches, evidence, and practical pathways to advance the uptake and scaling of Nature-based Solutions
December 10, 2025
With this seminar, NATURANCE brought together leading voices to discuss practical pathways to mobilise finance for Nature‑based Solutions (NbS). The online event showcased a range of mechanisms and instruments designed to bridge the gap between public funding and private investment, emphasising the importance of blended finance, risk‑sharing models, and strategic partnerships. Speakers highlighted real‑world examples where innovative financing structures have catalysed investment in NbS, underlining the need for strong governance, high‑quality data, and demand‑driven project pipelines to unlock capital at scale. The session also addressed challenges and enablers for aligning financial flows with environmental and social co‑benefits, offering actionable insights for policymakers, investors, and practitioners seeking to accelerate NbS uptake.

With this fourth seminar of the series, NATURANCE, together with ClimateWise, explored recent advances in how Nature-based Solutions (NbS) reduce climate and flood risks, deliver social and environmental co-benefits, and improve approaches relevant to insurers and policymakers. The session presented results from the NATURANCE project, including systematic evidence on risk reduction performance and a novel object-based catastrophe model used to quantify NbS impacts on flood risk. Discussions also addressed valuation of NbS co-benefits and practical barriers insurers face, such as short planning horizons and market effects, drawing on examples from France, the UK, and the Netherlands to highlight coordination mechanisms and cost-benefit outcomes. The event provided insights into how integrated modelling and transparent valuation can strengthen the case for embedding NbS in climate risk management frameworks.

Bringing together experts from NetworkNature, NATURANCE, the Climate Finance Facility (CFF), the Gap Fund, UNEP, and the Sustainable Finance Observatory, the discussion showcased practical financing mechanisms, risk-mitigation approaches, and global case studies demonstrating how urban NbS can function as valuable assets rather than costs. Speakers highlighted the importance of blended finance, innovative instruments, and strong municipal ownership to de-risk investments and attract private capital, while stressing equity, inclusivity, and data-driven decision-making as key conditions for scaling NbS in cities.
