Natural flood and drought risk management

Wetland restoration as nature-based solutions: management and financing needs.

Summary

This Innovation Lab addressed the use and financing of wetland restoration as a Nature-based Solution in Sweden, exploring in particular:

  • If, how and when ecosystem services of restored wetlands can be used for carbon sequestration, for biodiversity support, for improving water quality and to protect Swedish communities against floods and drought.
  • Potential barriers and related innovative solutions for implementing wetland restoration projects across Sweden, and making them successful.
  • Potential finance solutions for enhanced goal accomplishment.

This was done using experiences from several on-going wetland restoration projects in Sweden. The participants included key Swedish actors in wetland restoration.

Outcomes

A working hypothesis discussed at Lab meetings is that there is significant potential for additional wetland restoration projects in Sweden. However, this may require improvements to, and alternatives for, the predominant funding model involving the central government;

The Lab series implied a progression from the identification of bottlenecks in the first two Labs, to formulation of ideas and forward-looking solutions for the use and financing of wetland restoration in the third Lab.
