Nature at the Core of Resilience: NATURANCE at the Global Platform for DRR 2025

The event highlighted how nature-based and ecosystem-based approaches can reduce disaster risk and build long-term resilience.

The 8th session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP2025), held in Geneva (Switzerland) from June 2nd – 6th under the auspices of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), is the world’s premier forum for assessing progress and shaping global strategies on disaster resilience.

Thematic Session 2.2: “Leveraging Values of Nature for a Resilient Future took place on June 5th, from 16:00 to 18:00 CEST. It brought together experts, policymakers, and practitioners to explore how nature-based and ecosystem-based approaches can reduce disaster risk and build long-term resilience – and the NATURANCE team was part of the discussion!

Swenja Surminski from the London School of Economics and Managing Director for Climate and Sustainability at Marsh McLennan, who is leading the NATURANCE innovation labs, shared insights on nature-positive insurance and finance innovations that support adaptation and risk reduction, especially in vulnerable regions.

Jaroslav Mysiak from Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC), and coordinator of NATURANCE, contributed to the organization of the session, helping frame the agenda around integrating nature in disaster and climate risk governance.

The session emphasized the need for integrated governance, inclusive financial instruments, and robust assessment frameworks to scale Nature-based Solutions – an agenda NATURANCE continues to advance across Europe and beyond.
