Harnessing insurance to promote nature-based solutions for wildfire risk management.
This Innovation Lab, co-organized by Firelogue and NATURANCE, explored how insurance can promote NbS for wildfire risk management. As part of the Horizon Europe project on wildfire, Firelogue incorporates a Wildfire Insurance Working Group, which has been eager to collaborate with NATURANCE on this topic.
The Lab’s main objective was to facilitate discussions on how insurers can forge partnerships with risk managers, ecologists, and other stakeholders to develop cutting-edge insurance products that foster the widespread adoption of NbS.
The focus was on understanding the nature of NbS for wildfire, and how insurance companies can support local communities, national forest agencies, and other policy agents in the implementation of NbS, to effectively manage wildfire risks for a more resilient and sustainable future.
The Lab, which included interactive exercises, motivated follow-up sessions in Solsona, Spain and Nea Makri, Greece, to further explore policy options and business cases for NbS in wildfire risk management.

The Lab developed various suggestions that could help address the lack of NbS incentives in wildfire insurance, including:
The implementation of community-based insurance products that are better suited to reward community investments in wildfire NbS as a public good;
Regulations on parametric wildfire insurance products that provide transparent information on the risks and that take account of NbS measures in place;
Regulations that require differentiated insurance pricing to reflect DRR/NbS;
Mandatory implementation of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures;
Revision of the EU Solidarity Fund to encourage Member States to invest in NBS, and potentially instituting a complementary EU reinsurance instrument also linked to DRR/NbS.
