SUMMARY:WORKSHOP | Nature-based solutions and insurance
DESCRIPTION:This training session, co-organised by the NATURANCE project with Munich Climate Insurance Initiative (MCII) under the CLIMER programme, explores the innovative concept of combining natural ecosystems with financial strategies to tackle climate and environmental challenges. Participants will learn how Nature-based Solutions (NbS) can be financed and implemented to strengthen resilience and sustainability. The lesson presents key principles of naturance, showcases successful projects, and highlights the benefits of integrating natural capital into financial decision-making.\nBy grasping the synergy between nature and finance, learners will be better equipped to advocate for and design strategies that leverage natural assets for both economic and environmental benefits.\nTo kick things off, Corinne Martin and Jonathan Middleton (Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership) will set the stage with an introduction to NbS in insurance and a look at the NATURANCE consortium’s work. Next, Guillermo García (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) will introduce the concept and format of the Innovation Lab. He will share its main aims, highlight key results, and reflect on the lessons learned.\nNeil Gunn (Willis Towers Watson) will bring in an industry perspective on NbS in insurance. He will explore some of the key barriers that currently make it challenging to integrate NbS into insurance, while also pointing to the opportunities they can create for the sector.\nSubsequently, following the Innovation Labs presentation, Zuzanna Kozłowska and Pranav Kaundinya (Grantham Research Institute) will guide an interactive discussion. This will be a chance for everyone to reflect on the ideas presented, share input, and explore different viewpoints. If time allows, the activity may also include a short Q&A segment to encourage further exchange.\nSLIDE DECK\n
